Apologies that we’ve been a bit quiet of late. We’ve been quietly hibernating in front of the fire, waiting for spring!
Without further ado, we proudly present our next tasting…
The lesser known Highlands
On the map, the Highlands area takes in all of northern mainland Scotland except for Speyside – from above Cambeltown on the Kintyre peninsula in the south west, northeast across northern Glasgow to include Perth and Arbroath, and up to Cape Wrath and Wick at the top. (The Lowlands to the south includes Glasgow, Edinburgh, Berwick and Gretna.)
Although these regions are legally delimited, they follow political rather than geophysical boundaries and “saying there is a regional terroir in Scotch whisky (any whisky) is a bit like saying all French red wines taste the same” to quote Dave Broom.
Anyway, the Highlands are themselves sub-divided into North, South, West, East and Central areas. Some are smoky, some are matured in French oak in a classic Speyside style, and of course there are grain distilleries there too, most notable the giant Invergordon, in, er, Invergordon. Of course we’re covering each region:
- Ben Nevis (west)
- Blair Atholl (central)
- Dalmore (north)
- Glengarioch (east)
- Glenglassaugh (east)
- Glengoyne (south)
We’re really looking forward to tasting these, and to seeing you all – it’s been too long!
